We are excited that you are considering membership in the GFWC Anchorage Woman’s Club. AWC was founded in 1915 and is a community service organization. Our goal is to support each other and our community in ways that will make all our lives richer.
We are part of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) which has its headquarters in Washington, D.C. The motto of GFWC is “Unity in Diversity.”
We meet twice a month on the first and third Thursdays. The first Thursday is an Open Lunch Forum at the Hilton Hotel, where we always have an interesting speaker. The third Thursday meeting is our Business Meeting which is held in the historic Pioneer Schoolhouse. We have been caretakers of this beautiful building for many decades.
GFWC AWC has six Community Service Program areas: Arts, Conservation, Education, Home Life, International Outreach, and Public Issues. In the past have we provided defibrillators for police vehicles and have a fund to resupply the consumable part of these AEDs. This was done as a Community Improvement Program.
Each of our Community Service Programs (CSPs) has a chairman to help her committee plan the work for the year. We recommend that you choose at least one of these areas in which you have an interest. Let someone know your interest and we will put you in touch with the chairman. We feel this is an excellent way to meet new people in the club and become active right away.
There are many opportunities to help AWC with its numerous projects and events, such as baking cookies for the reception held after Naturalization Ceremonies by the Public Issues CSP. Through active involvement in our activities you will form lasting friendships. Our goal is not only to enhance our community through volunteerism, but also to support each other.
The motto for the 2016-2018 administration is: "Writing our history through volunteer service." We honor those who paved the way before us and those who are engaged in bettering our community today. Please come join AWC and actively help make Anchorage a better place to live for everyone.
